Sci-Fi Cover Art: The Good, The Bad, and The Totally Bizarre

“From romance covers we moved on to science fiction, wondering if sci-fi cover art might offer more. And holy moly, what we started seeing was bizarre, hilarious, campy, creepy, striking, surreal, sometimes sexy, and extremely cool. Flying saucers, planetary landscapes, lots of rockets, babes in inter-galactic distress, alien monsters, cyborg enemies, and on and on. The covers we came across were sinister, lovely, and completely ridiculous. Below, a selection of some of the sci-fi cover stand-outs.”

The new Krewe of Chewbacchus will take to the streets March 6

http://www.nola.com/mardigras/index.ssf/2011/01/the_new_krewe_of_chewbacchus_w.html

“The krewe is based out of 3 Ring Circus Arts Education Center’s The Big Top gallery, but members are creating a fleet floats and throws, including flying saucers made from hubcaps and old kitchenware as well as alien and robot puppets, at the Chewy Den, 4820 Banks St., No. 6, in New Orleans, every Wednesday from 7 to 10 p.m. until they roll.

Inspired by Zulu and then Muses, who created the much-sought-after throws of decorated coconuts and shoes, respectively, the Chewbacchus will create and then toss to the crowds furry, homemade wookie bandleros, such as those worn by the huge, furry “Star Wars” creature who inspired the krewe’s name and theme.

Several events and fundraisers are planned, including a Sci Fi fashion show “Set Your Phasers to Stunning.” The next Chewbacchus party is Jan. 20 at the Big Top and features music by the Other Planets.”

Robot made from crashed bomber comes back to life after 45 years of storage

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1331949/George-foot-robot-comes-life-45-years-stored-inventors-garage.html

He didn’t have any intelligence. And he moved with just a slow, lumbering shuffle of his metallic feet.

But one of Britain’s first humanoid robots, built just after the Second World War, has been given a new lease of life after having languished in a garage for the past 45 years.

Former spy catcher and RAF officer Tony Sale, 79, built the incredible 6ft high robot, George, in 1950 for just £15 using scrap metal from a crashed Wellington bomber plane.

At the time Mr Sale was only 19 and his amazing man-sized model, which could walk and ‘talk’ stunned the world.
